Movies versus Cricket World Cup

Indians are awaiting for the summon of the ICC cricket World Cup on February 19 when India will take on Bangladesh in our first match.

Everybody is excited, oh wait, not everybody. Some are worried too. And this worried section is the box office and the film fraternity. No they aren’t worried about India’s performance at the tournament, but about the fact that audiences will stick to the matches and not go for movies.

The World Cup will end only on April 2 (with the cup in M S Dhoni’s hands hopefully!), and the box office response is expected to be slow until then (unless God forbid, India is chucked out early). That would mean that films like 7 KHOON MAAF, TANU WEDS MANU, SATRANGEE PARACHUTE, S, GAME and F.A.L.T.U. may take a hit. However, the film-makers are smart too. They have kept March empty for their release, as they know that people would be engrossed in the matches. In such circumstances, the theaters would find it profitable to screen the LIVE action form the cricketing grounds. In fact the World Cup has come as a boon for many small budget films, since they ill not competition with the big buck movies. The currently awaited sequels include DON 2: THE CHASE CONTINUES, RACE 2, DHOOM 3, MOST WANTED (WANTED), BE POSITIVE (NO ENTRY) ,PARTNER 2, MR INDIA 2, KABHIE KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM 2, MURDER 2, ANDAZ APNA APNA 2 , JAANE BHI DO YAARON 2, HOUSEFUL 2, DOSTANA 2, DABANNG 2, KRRISH 2 and DOUBLE DHAMAL (DHAMAL).

Actually directors cannot be blamed for this sudden trend of sequels. The sequels did get a good success rate in our industry, with LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI (MUNNA BHAI M B B S), DHOOM 2, AND GOLMAAL RETURNS AND GOLMAAL 2 (GOLMAAL) doing extremely well at the box office. Dev Anand rocks Mumbai streets!

Dev Anand has hit the crowded streets of Mumbai like never before!

Through to an exclusive contract with the city’s leading outdoor publicity agency Global Advertisers, huge hoardings of the evergreen actor’s colorized version of the 1961 hit ‘Hum Dono’, have been spread across heavy-traffic spots in the city’s most buzzing areas like Juhu, Andheri, Marine Drive, Peddar Road, Borivali, Sion and Malad.

“It’s a privilege to be associated with a legendary actor like Dev Saab. We are committed to help him repeat the success of the classic film,” said Sanjeev Gupta, MD, Global Advertisers.

Dev Anand is 87 but he doesn’t hide his excitement. He wants audiences to see his charming self 50 years ago and says he will colour more of his black and white films if ‘Hum Dono’ succeeds again.

For the record, this was the last black and white film from his production house Navketan Films and marked his first double role too. Written by his brother Vijay Anand and directed by Amarjeet, ‘Hum Dono’ became the official entry from India to the Berlin Film Festival then.

Apart from Dev Anand’s acting, the film’s music was a rage with scintillating melodies like “Main Zindagi Ka Saath” and “Abhi Na Jao Chod Kar”.
